Case Study - The King's School
The Problem
The King's School suffered a rapid decline in the quality of their grounds due to watering restrictions and a lack of rainfall. This was producing hard, cracked playing surfaces resulting in injuries and unplayable conditions. In addition they were pinpointed as one of Sydney Water's top 200 users and were required to formulate a plan to further reduce their water consumption. The school also needed to improve drainage around the White Oval to enhance the quality of the main sports oval and also to increase its responsiveness to wet weather. King's had a number of water issues around the property that needed to be combined and developed into a strategic plan to enable water distribution when they wanted it and to 'drought proof' the grounds.
The Solution
Sustainable Harvest conducted a Water Audit of the site and used the information gathered to develop a Water Management Plan for the school. This was a roadmap devised to solve all of the School's water issues in seven key steps. Through a combination of the School's funds and government grants, a project was initiated to shave the school's water use by over 50%. Water was collected in existing on-site dams and new storage tanks through an integrated collection system. Advanced pumping systems and water efficient irrigation systems were installed on the grounds to ensure water was distributed at maximum efficiency.
The Outcome
King's now have control of water distribution and management at the school, which has improved the conditions of the grounds in dry and wet weather. The school will save over 100 Olympic Sized swimming pool's worth of water annually and have ceased to be one of Sydney Water's top 200 users. King's can now look forward to having lush green playing fields all year round
