Water Recycling
Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world, yet we manage to use more than 1.3 million litres of water per person each year and subsequently our rate of consumption is the third highest in the world. The majority of water is used in the agricultural sector 67% domestic consumption accounts for 9% of total use and the remaining 24% is split between industry and the commercial sectors.
Water Recycling is a generic term covering water reclamation and reuse where the finished product is called recycled water. Most recycled water comes from domestic sewage effluent or municipal wastewater. There are two standards of used water that determine the level of treatment involved and the restrictions on reuse. Greywater, is the term for effluent from baths, showers, basins and laundry. Blackwater, is the term used for sewage effluents.
